Encaustic

Encaustic Paintings….

The process of encaustic painting involves the layering of a hot wax medium that consists of natural beeswax with damar resin. A pallet of color is achieved through the addition of pigments mixed into the hot wax. A painting can consist of upwards of 50 layers of wax, each layer fused with a heat gun or torch. Photos, ephemera and collage elements can be added and embedded between layers. Encaustic painting is actually an ancient process dating back to the Greco-Roman period and has been revitalized and growing since contemporary artists rediscovered the magic and beauty of this process in the 1960s.
